Nature reserve declared to coincide with King’s visit

BBC Science · 1 month ago

The Isle of Man has awarded its top conservation designation to a coastal sand dune region, with the announcement coinciding with the King's maiden official visit to the island as Lord of Mann. The Cronk y Bing Ayres reserve now qualifies for maximum statutory protection under Manx legislation.

The reserve holds significant ecological value, encompassing varied habitats that support more than 120 bird species, including a substantial proportion of the island's most threatened avian varieties. The site also shelters rare plant species and ground-nesting shorebirds, making it a critical conservation area for the Manx Wildlife Trust.

  • Isle of Man designates coastal sand dune reserve with highest legal protection, timed with King's visit
