A geology expert said the collapse released about 20 million cubic metres of water and created waves estimated at 100 to 200 metres high. Nepal’s disaster agency reported 823 people out of contact, including 579 tourists and 33 British nationals; in neighbouring Tibet, three deaths and 558 missing people were reported. Rescue teams and families are searching hospitals and official lists, while Bir Hospital has said it will treat victims free of charge.
