Netflix Boards ‘The Airport Chaplain’, Australia Drama Series Starring Hugo Weaving & Shabana Azeez
Netflix has acquired global rights (excluding Australia) to *The Airport Chaplain*, a new eight-part drama series produced by Sydney-based Wooden Horse, starring Hugo Weaving and Shabana Azeez. The show will launch on 26 August, streaming day-and-date with its commissioning broadcaster, Australia's SBS, marking a further push by Netflix to bring Australian scripted drama to a worldwide audience of over 190 countries.
Weaving plays Tobias Wallace, a scruffy, rule-bending chaplain at a busy international airport terminal, while Azeez plays Mira, an ambitious new terminal manager who initially wants him gone before coming to see him differently. The series, inspired by a real-life encounter between Wooden Horse co-founder Jude Troy and an airport chaplain, features an ensemble cast including Claudia Karvan and Thomas Weatherall, and will premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival next month, with a second season already in development.
