Ted Kaczynski was an American mathematician who later carried out a long campaign of bomb attacks. Between 1978 and 1995, he sent or planted explosives that killed three people and injured many others, becoming known as the “Unabomber”, a name linked to the early targets of the investigation.

Kaczynski had entered Harvard University as a teenager and later lived in isolation in a cabin in Montana. His case drew attention to questions about his early life, his anti-technology beliefs and the long FBI investigation that eventually identified him.

The manhunt ended in 1996 after Kaczynski’s brother recognised ideas in a published manifesto and alerted the authorities. Kaczynski was convicted of murder and other offences and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
