Netflix Inks Exclusive Deal for Video Episodes of Vox Media Podcasts ‘Unexplainable,’ ‘Switched on Pop’

Variety · 2 hours ago

Netflix has struck an exclusive deal with the Vox Media Podcast Network for video versions of two of its podcasts, "Unexplainable" and "Switched on Pop". The agreement marks the first Vox Media titles to arrive on the streaming service and reflects Netflix's continuing push to build out its podcast offering as audiences increasingly watch, rather than simply listen to, podcasts on screens.

Video episodes will begin rolling out the week of 13 July, with both shows moving to "always-on video programming"; the video versions will be exclusive to Netflix, while audio episodes remain available across all major podcast platforms. "Unexplainable", which explores scientific mysteries, will publish weekly on Mondays, while "Switched on Pop" breaks down the craft behind hit songs. The deal follows James Murdoch's Lupa Systems acquiring the Vox Media Podcast Network, New York Magazine and Vox.com for more than $300 million, a purchase that closed on 7 July. Separately, PMC, the parent of Variety, has agreed to acquire other Vox Media brands including The Verge and Eater.

  • Netflix wins exclusive rights to video versions of two Vox podcasts.
  • Video episodes start the week of 13 July; audio stays everywhere.
  • Deal follows Murdoch's Lupa buying Vox Media Podcast Network.
