Netflix is developing a feature film about Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton’s rescue of the Endurance crew after their ship was trapped and destroyed by Antarctic ice. Phil Barantini, director of Netflix’s Adolescence, will direct from a script by The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith, making the project a major historical survival drama for the streamer.

The story will depict Shackleton’s 1914 Trans-Antarctic Expedition, during which his crew survived for months on ice floes before he led a lifeboat journey to secure their rescue; all crew members survived. Ridley Scott is among the producers, no cast has been announced, and Netflix hopes to begin production next year.
