Netflix releases a VHS-quality version of Stranger Things’ first season

Engadget · 1 month ago

Netflix has released a "VHS" special edition of the first season of Stranger Things, digitally recreating the look of a worn videotape. The move is the latest way the streaming giant is extending the franchise's shelf life even after the series concluded, leaning on nostalgia for viewers who grew up renting tapes from video shops.

The edition presents episodes in the boxy 4:3 aspect ratio of old tube televisions, complete with black bars, a soft, grainy picture, and "pan-and-scan" cropping that mimics how widescreen footage was once squeezed onto smaller screens. The Duffer Brothers said they wanted it to look as if it had come straight off a shelf at Hawkins' fictional Family Video store, and even Netflix's own opening animation was altered to match the dated aesthetic, though the audio remains unchanged. The creators said further seasons could get the same treatment "maybe," depending on how many people watch this one, and it can be found via the release's landing page or by searching "Stranger Things VHS" on Netflix.

  • Netflix released a retro VHS-style cut of Stranger Things season one.
  • It features 4:3 ratio, grainy picture and pan-and-scan cropping.
  • Duffer Brothers may extend it to other seasons if popular.
