Netflix strikes video licensing deal with Penske Media brands including Variety and Billboard

Variety · 2 months ago

Netflix has agreed a video licensing deal with a range of leading print and digital publishers, bringing their short-form video content onto the streaming platform from 3 August. The partners include Penske Media's PMX unit — home to Variety, Billboard, Rolling Stone, The Hollywood Reporter, Eater and Indiewire — as well as BuzzFeed Studios, Condé Nast, Hearst Magazines, People Inc. and Tastemade. The move continues Netflix's strategy of diversifying beyond scripted and unscripted shows into areas such as video games, podcasts and live events, aiming to deepen viewer engagement with the personalities and stories they already follow.

The licensed material spans news, feature, lifestyle and how-to content, covering travel, cooking, fashion, celebrity profiles and home tips, with episodes ranging from two to three minutes up to 20 minutes or more. Featured series include Variety's "Know Their Lines?", Vanity Fair's "Lie Detector", Billboard's "24 Hrs With" and Tastemade's "Struggle Meals". The content will initially be available to subscribers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Netflix executive John Derderian said the partnerships help members "keep exploring the stories and personalities they love long after the final credits roll".
