## Key points

- Netflix's NFL opener series reunites "Friday Night Lights" director Peter Berg and star Kyle Chandler.
- First film aired before the Rams-49ers game from Melbourne on Thursday.
- Berg will direct three more gameday openers through the 2026-27 season.

## Summary

Netflix has confirmed that its first NFL gameday opener of the season, narrated by "Friday Night Lights" star Kyle Chandler, aired ahead of Thursday's broadcast from Melbourne, Australia, with coverage of the Los Angeles Rams against the San Francisco 49ers beginning at 3.30pm PT. The two-minute film, titled "For the Love of Football" and directed by Peter Berg, weaves together footage of youth football teams and their coaches with NFL game action, echoing the tone of the 2004 film and TV series that first paired Berg and Chandler.

Berg, who directed the original "Friday Night Lights" film, is helming openers for all four of Netflix's NFL gamedays this season, with further instalments planned for Green Bay Packers vs Rams on Thanksgiving Eve, a Christmas Day double-header featuring the Packers, Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos, and a Week 18 fixture on 9 January 2027. Berg is also directing, writing and producing "The Mosquito Bowl" for Netflix, a World War Two sports drama based on Buzz Bissinger's novel, due in cinemas on 30 October ahead of its Netflix release on 25 November.
