Andy Weil, Netflix's longest-serving comedy programming leader at the VP level, is transitioning to Amazon MGM Studios to serve as Head of Comedy, beginning September 14. Over his 11-year tenure at Netflix starting in 2015, Weil oversaw the development and production of numerous acclaimed comedic series, including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Master of None, BoJack Horseman, Russian Doll, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. He brings additional entertainment industry experience from his time at NBCUniversal, where he rose to VP Comedy while developing successful broadcast content.

The appointment occurs as Amazon MGM Studios restructures its scripted content divisions into discrete units focused on Drama, Comedy, and Young Adult programming, each reporting to Global Television Head Peter Friedlander—who previously managed Weil at Netflix. Amazon Prime Video has not yet established significant strength in half-hour comedies despite building notable success with dramas and young adult series, indicating the studio views Weil's hiring as central to expanding its comedy production capabilities.
