Netflix’s Grace and Frankie is presented as a comedy that grows stronger over its seven-season run, using its leads’ evolving friendship to explore starting over later in life. The series matters for centring older women and treating friendship as a lasting source of support, alongside romantic relationships and family ties.

Created by Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris, the show ran from 2015 to 2022 for 94 episodes. Jane Fonda plays sharp, controlled Grace Hanson, while Lily Tomlin plays free-spirited artist Frankie Bergstein; their lives are upended when their husbands, longtime law partners, reveal they are in love and plan to marry. The women share a San Diego beach house and face new relationships, family complications, health scares and ventures such as developing a toilet for older adults.
