Netflix's anime adaptation of Kouji Miura's manga Blue Box is set to finally advance its central romance in season 2, according to new series director Daisuke Sakō. After 25 episodes of slow-burn tension between badminton player Taiki Inomata and his basketball-star housemate and crush Chinatsu Kano, Sakō tells Polygon that "their relationship begins to move forward" this season, picking up directly from the first season's date-like finale.

Sakō, previously known for directing Lupin Zero, takes over from season one's Yūichirō Yano, while the newly formed studio Electric Circus replaces Telecom Animation Film on animation duties, though composer Yūko Kakihara and character designer Miho Tanino return. The director highlights how the manga, unlike many romance titles, grounds Chinatsu's conflicted feelings in her backstory rather than leaving them unexplained, and says the new season aims to capture the manga's technique of obscuring Chinatsu's face during key emotional scenes, translating that stillness into animated form as the story's sporting pace temporarily slows.
