Netflix is developing Steps, an animated reimagining of Cinderella told from the perspective of her misunderstood stepsister, positioned as a potential successor to the streaming giant's 2025 hit Kpop Demon Hunters. Co-directed by Alyce Tzue and Raya and the Last Dragon's John Ripa, the film subverts the classic fairy tale by making stepsister Lilith, rather than Cinderella, the protagonist, drawing on Tzue's own experience of feeling like an outsider growing up as the only Asian child in a homogeneous New Jersey community.

The story follows Lilith (voiced by Ali Wong), who accidentally turns her sister Margot (Stephanie Hsu) into a frog while attempting to conjure her own magic after seeing the Fairy Godmother (Bette Midler) help Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried). Cinderella and Lilith must then join forces to reverse the spell and thwart the scheming Priscilla (Nikki Glaser). The film's visual style draws on French Rococo art and the French Cendrillon fairy tale, using pastel tones to signal conformity and bolder colours for scenes outside the kingdom, while the directors say they deliberately varied the stepsisters' designs to avoid narrow stereotypes of beauty. Tzue said the project draws inspiration from Frozen's focus on sisterhood over romance, and that the team feels supported rather than pressured by Netflix despite comparisons to Kpop Demon Hunters.
