Nevada allows Uber, Tesla and Waymo to start paid robotaxi service

Engadget · 3 hours ago

The Nevada Transportation Authority has granted Tesla, Waymo and Uber permits to operate paid autonomous taxi services in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas. The approvals mark a significant expansion of commercial robotaxi operations in the United States, allowing thousands of driverless vehicles to begin charging passengers for rides across the region within the coming year.

Tesla received permission to deploy up to 5,000 robotaxis over the next 12 months and can expand statewide provided it notifies regulators, though it says it would be satisfied reaching 2,500 vehicles by 2027; the firm is also producing a briefing video for first responders on handling emergencies involving its cars. Waymo, which began fully driverless rides in Las Vegas in July without charging, can now deploy up to 1,000 paid robotaxis, while Uber has also been cleared for 1,000 vehicles, operated in partnership with Amazon's Zoox and Hyundai's Motional.
