Actor Jon Hamm is returning to television in American Hostage, a new MGM+ crime drama debuting with a two-episode premiere on 20 September. A trailer for the series has been released showing Hamm's character, radio host Fred Heckman, being drawn into a real-life hostage crisis as it unfolds live on air, marking his first major TV return since Your Friends and Neighbors.

The series is based on the scripted podcast of the same name, which also starred Hamm and premiered in 2022, and dramatises the actual 1977 case of Tony Kiritsis, an Indianapolis car salesman who took his mortgage broker hostage after a property deal collapsed, using local radio to broadcast his demands. In the show, Hamm's Heckman becomes caught between Kiritsis, played by Giovanni Ribisi, and hostage Richard Hall, played by Kristoffer Polaha, with William Jackson Harper and Mireille Enos also starring as his producer and wife respectively. The same events previously inspired the 2025 film Dead Man's Wire.
