Wells disappeared on 4 July after travelling by boat with friends to Horn Island, a barrier island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. Search crews looked for him for two days before a National Park Service ranger found his remains on the island’s north-western tip on 6 July; the audio reportedly described a boat carrying seven people taking on water near the island.
