Sheffield City Council will begin construction on a new bicycle lane along Castle Street in the city centre this summer, creating a segregated two-way route that keeps cyclists separate from both motor vehicles and foot traffic. The scheme includes relocation of the existing taxi rank to Haymarket and the introduction of three additional pedestrian crossings at nearby junctions, with design inspiration drawn from Dutch traffic-calming principles.

The junction at Castle Green will feature a raised platform entrance where vehicles must traverse a hump before accessing side streets, prioritising cycle and pedestrian movement. Council officials frame the investment as part of an economic development strategy, arguing that pedestrian-friendly and cycle-accessible streets encourage longer dwell times and commercial activity, supported by outcomes from previous Peace Gardens and Grey to Green projects.
