New D&D RPG Warlock is an open world spell-collecting game with a touch of Far Cry, and that’s just fine by me, actually
Invoke, a studio staffed by former Far Cry, Watch Dogs and Splinter Cell developers, has revealed more about Warlock, an open-world action RPG built around the Dungeons & Dragons ruleset. Set in the Domain of Dread known as Darkon, the game follows warrior Kaatri, who gains magical abilities after allying with witch queen Tasha. The project is notable for blending familiar D&D spellcasting with the exploration-driven, systems-heavy design sensibilities of its creators' past open-world work.
Players gather and combine classic D&D spells such as Eldritch Blast, Levitate and Black Tentacles, alongside reworked or entirely new abilities like Fae Switch and Tasha's Leash, many of which can be used creatively for both combat and traversal, and combined for extra effects. Rather than unlocking spells through a fixed upgrade tree, many are optional discoveries scattered across a world Invoke describes as dense rather than vast, designed to minimise long, empty travel and reduce reliance on conventional map-based navigation. Studio figures Jeffrey Hattem and Dominic Guay, speaking in a roundtable reported by wccftech, said the aim is to prioritise organic exploration over forced story beats while keeping the game accessible to players unfamiliar with D&D.
