A 75-year-old grandmother died in Massachusetts after trying unsuccessfully to save her one-year-old grandson, who had fallen into a pond at Nara Park in Acton. The child slipped into the water in an area with slippery rocks while out with his grandmother and two siblings, and neither he nor his grandmother survived despite emergency efforts, highlighting the risks posed by unsupervised access to water near designated swimming areas.

The toddler, almost two, and his grandmother had been dropped off at the park by the children's mother and were not dressed for swimming when they entered the water; the other grandchildren raised the alarm. Lifeguards pulled the pair from the pond and began CPR before they were taken to hospital, but the boy died on the day of the incident and his grandmother succumbed to her injuries the following day. Authorities, including Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Acton Fire Chief Anita Arnum, said they do not suspect foul play and praised the rescue crews' efforts, noting the pond has a separate designated swimming area from where the victims fell in.
