New Jersey's Democratic Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell resigned on Friday following an independent investigation that substantiated sexual harassment and ethics violations against him. Governor Mikie Sherrill confirmed his resignation after giving him an ultimatum, stating that the investigation found he had failed to uphold his office's responsibilities and demonstrated a pattern of behaviour inconsistent with the administration's standards. The report documented serious, repeated violations of state policy, including ethical lapses and confirmed sexual harassment.

State Comptroller Shirley Emehelu was immediately appointed as acting secretary of state—a position Caldwell also held. Governor Sherrill emphasised the urgency of filling the role with midterm elections scheduled for 39 days away. The investigation found that Caldwell had told a female staff member "you young women are looking for young sperm" after she indicated a younger friend was uninterested in a romantic relationship with him. Investigators concluded this constituted sexual harassment and found Caldwell's denial of making the remark lacked credibility, despite his previous claims that the allegations were false and misleading.
