The NFL and NFL Players Association have agreed a one-year trial of a points-based fine system for the 2026 season, intended to deter techniques most likely to cause injuries. It combines tougher consequences for repeat offences, including one-game suspensions, with end-of-season refunds for players who avoid further safety violations.

Players receive one point per offence and will be suspended after three points, with five priority violations—including blindside blocks and horse-collar tackles—carrying particular emphasis. A single fine across those five categories can earn a 50% refund, while one fine in other safety categories can be refunded in full; repeat offenders lose refunds, may face league meetings with coaches, and their clubs could receive increased penalties.
