Plug-in solar panels can now legally be sold in Britain, offering households a cheaper, portable way to generate electricity and potentially reduce energy bills. However, their immediate availability is limited: Argos was the only major retailer selling kits at launch, and its customers will not receive orders until October, while Octopus Energy expects deliveries from late September.

Argos is offering kits priced from £599 to £989, while Octopus Energy’s prices start at £450 for a single panel; estimated annual savings range from £70 to £110. B&Q hopes to begin sales in October, while Amazon, Currys, Lidl and Wickes have not confirmed launch dates. The Government says almost 172,000 solar installations have been fitted in 2026 so far, but experts caution that older or unsuitable household wiring could create safety risks if plug-in systems are incorrectly installed.
