New Pokémon Movie Announced After 7 years, and It Will Be the First of Its Kind

Polygon · 4 hours ago

Pokémon has announced its first theatrical film in seven years, "Pokémon: Wild Card," set for release "in 2027 and beyond." Revealed at the Pokémon XP convention, the animated feature marks a significant departure for the franchise: it will be the first Pokémon movie not to feature long-running anime protagonist Ash, and the first to centre its story on the Pokémon Trading Card Game rather than the mainline anime, which concluded in 2023.

The film will be animated by CloverWorks, known for Spy x Family, directed by Katsuhiko Kitada, with character design by Akemi Hayashi. It will be the 25th Pokémon movie overall and the first since 2020's Secrets of the Jungle. A trailer showed an as-yet-unnamed boy described as a "Pokémon TCG player" alongside a Mimikyu, playing a Psychic-type deck, suggesting the film will explore whether the card game exists within the same universe as the animated Pokémon world, something never explicitly confirmed in the anime.
