New research into basking sharks around island

BBC Science · 1 month ago

A new conservation initiative has been established on the Isle of Man to investigate basking shark populations and behaviour in the surrounding waters. Founded by marine scientist Gemma Scotts and fisheries official Tom Morgan, the Manx Shark Foundation emerged after two years of preliminary research and aims to understand the reasons behind the uptick in basking shark sightings observed recently in the region.

The foundation employs multiple research methods including underwater cameras, aerial drone surveys, and engagement with local fishing communities to gather data about shark movements and habitat use. Working collaboratively with environmental organisations and local authorities, the initiative also seeks to address broader knowledge gaps concerning other endangered marine species, such as tope sharks, whilst promoting conservation awareness throughout Manx waters.
