## Key points

- Season three teases Gandalf’s past with the Dark Wizard.
- Their identities may connect to Tolkien’s Blue Wizards.
- Gandalf’s quest begins with winning back an old friend.

## Summary

A featurette for season three of *The Rings of Power* hints at a long, forgotten history between Gandalf and Ciarán Hinds’ Dark Wizard. The suggestion raises the possibility that the two could be Tolkien’s Blue Wizards, whose identities remain unknown, and may offer clues to a longstanding Middle-earth mystery.

Hinds says the pair have a history tied to a mission lost to time, while Daniel Weyman describes Gandalf accessing a “Dreamscape” that revives memories of them together on a mountain. Their cloaks appear bluish, prompting speculation, but the featurette does not confirm they are the Blue Wizards. Weyman says Gandalf’s quest at the start of the season will be to “win your old friend back”; the season is due to debut on Prime Video on 11 November.
