New rules, managers and pundits: what’s different this Premier League season?

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

The Premier League's 2026-27 season, which kicks off on Friday, brings a raft of changes covering refereeing rules, an unprecedented turnover of managers, and shifts in broadcast coverage. The alterations are designed largely to reduce time-wasting and tighten VAR oversight, while the managerial changes reflect a period of major upheaval among the division's clubs ahead of the new campaign.

Referees will now use a five-second countdown on throw-ins and goal-kicks, with penalties for delay including reversed throw-ins or awarded corners, while injury stoppages will be extended from 30 seconds to a minute, with limited exceptions. Substitutions must be completed within 10 seconds or the replacement faces a further minute's delay, and VARs gain new powers to correct wrongly issued second yellow cards and to order retakes of set pieces preceded by an undetected attacking foul. Off the pitch, a record nine clubs start the season with new managers, including Xabi Alonso at Chelsea, Enzo Maresca at Manchester City and Andoni Iraola at Liverpool, while Arsenal's Mikel Arteta, in charge since 2019, becomes the division's longest-serving boss following the club's title win. The transfer window has also produced notable spending, including Elliot Anderson's £116m move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City.
