New York City lawmakers and privacy advocates are calling for a ban on facial-recognition technology at Madison Square Garden and other public venues. The proposed measure responds to concerns that MSG’s systems have been used to monitor critics, exclude lawyers involved in disputes with the company, and collect sensitive information about attendees.

Council member Shahana Hanif introduced the “Ban the Scan” bill in January, and it has gained 27 endorsements—more than half of the City Council—while discussions continue over advancing it. WIRED has reported that MSG holds watch lists, detailed visitor-tracking records and risk-scored dossiers on roughly 400 celebrities and VIPs; MSG says electronic facial recognition is comparable to ordinary human recognition.
