A newborn baby was found abandoned in the women's restroom of a ShopRite supermarket in White Plains, New York, on Sunday, with police identifying the infant's mother as a 32-year-old local resident who worked at the store. Officers gave the baby lifesaving medical care at the scene before the child was taken to hospital, where they are said to be in stable condition; the infant is now in the care of Westchester County Child Protective Services. The case has drawn attention to New York's safe haven laws, which authorities say could have allowed the mother to surrender the baby legally and without facing prosecution.

The mother is in custody as the White Plains Police Department and the Westchester County District Attorney's Office Special Prosecution Unit investigate. Officials highlighted the state's Abandoned Infant Protection Act, under which a parent can surrender an infant up to 30 days old without criminal charges, provided the baby is left with an appropriate person or at a safe location such as a hospital, police or fire station.
