Newcastle United have signed 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax in a deal worth up to £23m, tying him to a five-year contract that runs until 2031. Steur broke into the Ajax first team in the second half of last season, starting the De Klassieker win over Feyenoord at just 17, and topped several Opta metrics among Eredivisie midfielders aged 18 or under. His arrival follows Sandro Tonali's departure to Tottenham and speculation over captain Bruno Guimaraes, who has signalled a wish to join Arsenal. Steur is one of three players aged 20 or under signed this summer, alongside Bazoumana Toure and Ewen Jaouen, though he is expected to need time to adapt before challenging for a starting place under Eddie Howe.
