South Korean publisher Nexon is reportedly nearing a deal with Blizzard Entertainment to secure development rights for a new StarCraft title, according to a report by the newspaper Chosunilbo. The agreement is said to be close to finalisation ahead of BlizzCon, which takes place on 12–13 September, raising hopes that details could emerge at the event. It has been almost a decade since a new entry in the franchise, so confirmation of a fresh project would mark a significant moment for fans of the long-running strategy series.

The report's source claims that once finalised, Nexon would hold development rights for a sequel to the existing StarCraft series, though it remains unclear whether this would be a StarCraft 3, another instalment, or even a previously rumoured third-person shooter set in the universe. Any final terms would still need approval from Microsoft, which owns Blizzard. The original StarCraft launched in 1998, followed by StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty in 2010 and its last DLC in 2016, with StarCraft: Remastered in 2017 being the most recent release; Blizzard has previously cancelled other franchise projects, including the console title StarCraft: Ghost.
