Cage likens Marvel fight scenes to an overfunded wrestling spectacle

The Guardian ·

Nicolas Cage has criticised the Marvel Cinematic Universe, likening its superhero fight scenes to an overfunded wrestling spectacle. Speaking at a Texas fan convention, he said his remarks were made “with love” but found it difficult to watch gifted actors over 50 repeatedly prepare for fights in what he called “ridiculous outfits”.

Cage, 62, has played Ghost Rider in two films and recently starred in the Marvel-linked series *Spider-Noir*, which ended after one season. He said that role appealed to him for its black-and-white style and the chance to evoke classic actors such as Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney. Other filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, have also voiced doubts about superhero films; Cage’s next role is in a biopic of John Madden.

  • Nicolas Cage compared Marvel films to a well-funded wrestling spectacle.
  • He has appeared in two Ghost Rider films and Spider-Noir.
  • Cage says Spider-Noir’s classic black-and-white style drew him to the role.
