Nicole Kidman has said she was warned that marrying Tom Cruise at a young age could damage her career, but responded that she prioritised being in love and wanted to marry him. Speaking to British Vogue, she said the marriage and the intense tabloid attention that followed made her accustomed to life in the public eye, which has shaped much of her adult life.

Kidman and Cruise met while making 1989’s “Days of Thunder”, married in 1990 and separated in 2001 after 11 years together. Despite predictions that marriage would restrict her professionally, Kidman appeared in films including “To Die For”, “Practical Magic” and “Eyes Wide Shut”; after the split, she starred in “Moulin Rouge!”, “The Others” and won an Oscar for “The Hours”. She later said she had been “a child” when she married and needed to grow up.
