Far Out Magazine revisits Genesis' 1981 single 'No Reply At All' as a pivotal moment in the band's transformation from British progressive rock pioneers into one of the biggest pop acts of the 1980s. Fronted originally by Peter Gabriel, Genesis shifted direction after his 1975 departure, with drummer Phil Collins gradually taking over as vocalist and eventually steering the band towards radio-friendly, mainstream pop, culminating in extraordinary commercial success that outstripped any other band with progressive rock roots.

The track, taken from the album Abacab, featured Earth, Wind & Fire's Phenix Horns and reflected Collins' ambition to write music in the style of the Jackson 5, though it only reached number 29 on the main US charts. Its significance lies in being the first Genesis single released exclusively in the United States, never issued in the UK, signalling the band's deliberate targeting of the lucrative American market and foreshadowing the huge success that followed, with Genesis and Collins collectively selling well over 100 million records.
