## Key points

- A driver reported hitting an object on the road where Noah Presgrove was later found.
- Police cleared Chris Payette after inspecting his truck and questioning witnesses.
- Presgrove’s death remains under investigation, and his family has filed a lawsuit.

## Summary

Chris Payette says his truck struck something on a dark stretch of US-81 in Oklahoma at about 5.30am on 4 September 2023. Thirteen minutes later, 19-year-old Noah Presgrove was found dead nearby, and the unexplained circumstances of his death remain under investigation.

Payette said he thought he had hit a pothole or a small animal and continued driving; after learning of Presgrove’s death, he contacted Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Police inspected his truck, questioned him and his friends, and cleared him of wrongdoing, telling him the object was likely a roll of carpet found further along the road. Presgrove’s family has named Payette in an amended wrongful death lawsuit, though his lawyer says he may have been included to ensure all investigative leads are covered.
