The City Council in Danbury, Connecticut, voted 18-2 to allow legal permanent residents and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients to apply for jobs as city police officers, a change that officials say brings Danbury in line with existing state guidance. The vote came shortly after a week of ICE operations in the city that reportedly led to more than 60 arrests, prompting anger from local residents and officials, with council member Joe Britton, a Democrat, describing the raids as "frightening" and saying the ordinance change "sends a message to our immigrant community at large that you are welcome in Danbury."

City officials, including Democratic Mayor Roberto Alves, stressed that the change does not lower recruitment standards, and that all applicants, regardless of citizenship status, must still meet the same background, training, fitness and certification requirements. The amendment brings Danbury into line with Connecticut's Police Officer Standards and Training Council, which partially waived the citizenship requirement in 2020; officials said more than 30 other municipalities in the state already follow this standard. The measure passed with support from all 17 Democrats on the council and one Republican, while the two dissenting votes came from Republicans.
