Norris beats Russell to pole position at Zandvoort

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

Lando Norris secured pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, beating Mercedes driver George Russell by 0.102 seconds in a tense qualifying session shaped by the threat of rain. The result gives the McLaren driver a strong starting position at a circuit where he won from pole in 2024, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli starts third after narrowly missing out.

Teams rushed through their final qualifying runs as light rain began to fall, but the expected downpour never materially affected conditions. Antonelli was 0.031 seconds behind Russell and 0.009 seconds ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri; Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc took fifth and sixth for Ferrari, while Max Verstappen qualified seventh for his final home Dutch Grand Prix before the race leaves the calendar.

  • Norris takes Dutch Grand Prix pole ahead of Russell.
  • Rain fears prompted an unusually hurried final qualifying phase.
  • Championship leader Antonelli starts third, just 0.133 seconds off pole.
