The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) is considering lodging a formal complaint with FIFA's ethics committee over the decision to suspend Folarin Balogun's automatic one-match ban during the World Cup, following an intervention by US President Donald Trump. The United States forward had been expected to miss his side's last-16 tie against Belgium after receiving a straight red card in the win over Bosnia-Herzegovina, but the suspension was waived for 12 months with no reason given. The row has drawn wider scrutiny of FIFA's independence, with UEFA, Belgium's federation and now the IOC all raising concerns about the episode.

NFF president Lise Klaveness said the federation had reacted with "strong concern" and would decide at its next board meeting whether to pursue the case, potentially folding it into an existing inquiry into FIFA's Peace Prize award to Trump. Balogun's reinstatement followed a phone call between Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino, after which Trump said FIFA had made a "great decision"; Balogun went on to start the 4-1 defeat by Belgium. FIFA rejected Belgium's request for an explanation as "inadmissible", while UEFA said the decision had "crossed a red line", and reports suggest the IOC could separately investigate Infantino, an IOC member since 2020, over the affair.
