Norway's Princess Astrid, elder sister of the late King Harald V, has died aged 94, the royal palace announced. Her death came just two days after she made her final public appearance at her brother's state funeral on 9 September, marking a poignant end to a period of national mourning that had already seen Norway lose its longest-reigning modern monarch.

King Harald died on 28 August, aged 89, after more than 35 years on the throne, following complications from an infection while being treated for haemolytic anaemia; he was succeeded by his son, King Haakon VIII. Announcing Astrid's death, Haakon VIII said she had represented the Royal House "in a warm and dutiful manner" throughout her long life. Harald's funeral drew large crowds and emotional tributes in Oslo, including condolences from King Charles III, who described Harald, his second cousin once removed, as a "much-loved kinsman and friend."
