Noskova, an astonishing Wimbledon fightback – and a kiss to the sky

BBC Sport · 1 month ago

Linda Noskova has won the 2026 Wimbledon women's singles title, beating fellow Czech Karolina Muchova in a dramatic final on Centre Court. The 21-year-old survived a nerve-shredding collapse — squandering five championship points and being pulled into a deciding set — before recovering to claim her maiden Grand Slam crown. In an emotional victory speech, she paid tribute to her mother, Ivana, who died of cancer on the eve of Wimbledon 2024, kissing her hand and raising it to the sky as the crowd rose to applaud.

Having led 6-2 5-2, Noskova faltered badly when serving for the title, double-faulting and losing the set as Muchova saved three championship points. She left the court, splashed cold water on her face and told herself she would take "the big" trophy, before returning to save three break points, break Muchova and finally serve out victory on her sixth championship point. John McEnroe described her recovery as "one of the all-time greatest efforts you will ever see on this court", while former British number one Laura Robson noted the extraordinary tension in the stands.

  • Linda Noskova wins her first Wimbledon title over Karolina Muchova.
  • She recovered after wasting five championship points and losing a set.
  • Tearful Noskova dedicated the win to her late mother.
