## Key points

- A Reddit map depicts hypothetical nuclear strike zones across the UK.
- Major cities including Sheffield and London are marked as targets.
- The Government says nuclear conflict remains remote and cites deterrence.

## Summary

A Reddit user has created a map illustrating the potential blast and thermal effects of a hypothetical nuclear attack on the UK. The map gained attention after plans were announced to remake the 1980s film *Threads*, which depicted the aftermath of a nuclear strike on Sheffield.

The map marks three waves of targets and distinguishes blast destruction zones from areas at risk of severe burns and fires; it also notes that ground bursts would cause radioactive fallout. It identifies Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, much of London, Cardiff, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow among the cities that could be devastated. The UK Government says the risk of nuclear conflict remains remote and describes its deterrent, including a continuously patrolling nuclear-armed submarine, as a way to deter attacks.
