Nursery charged after two-year-old girl ‘choked to death on a sausage she was given for lunch’

Daily Mail · 1 day ago

A nursery in Radlett, Hertfordshire, is to be prosecuted following the death of two-year-old Sadie Salt, who choked on a sausage served during lunch in November 2020. Hertsmere Borough Council has authorised formal health and safety charges against Mini Learners nursery after a years-long investigation, giving her parents, Zoe and Adam Salt, hope of finally getting answers nearly six years after losing their daughter.

Sadie choked while eating with 25 other children on 12 November 2020; an air ambulance and paramedics attended, and she died two days later at St Mary's Hospital. An inquest opened in January 2022 has been deferred until the criminal case concludes, with the family raising concerns over staff supervision, the timing of the 999 call and the nursery's rescue attempt. The Salts have since raised over £75,000 for a children's intensive care charity and gathered 12,000 signatures on a petition calling for a ban on nurseries serving sausages and grapes to under-fives.
