## Key points

- Mamdani posted a Spanish-language video on rights during ICE encounters.
- Republican critics said the advice undermined immigration enforcement.
- The video followed political fallout over ICE’s arrest of Oscar Belgal.

## Summary

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani drew criticism from Republican politicians after posting a Spanish-language video explaining what rights people have if they encounter Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Opponents said the advice helped undocumented immigrants avoid enforcement; the video described legal limits on entry to private spaces and the right to remain silent or ask whether someone is free to leave.

Mamdani said officers need a judicial order to enter private spaces and advised viewers to check for a judge’s signature and ask for the order to be passed under a door. He also said the city and its police department do not assist with civil immigration enforcement, and affirmed the right to protest. The dispute comes amid criticism from parts of Mamdani’s political base over his response to the October 8 shooting and arrest of Dominican migrant Oscar Belgal, whom federal authorities described as undocumented and said had a felony record and gang affiliations.
