## Key points

- Obama is due to rally with Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
- El-Sayed faces questions about support among Black voters.
- Detroit voters interviewed expressed mixed views on Obama’s endorsement.

## Summary

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan, is due to rally with former President Barack Obama on Saturday, after Obama endorsed him and featured in a campaign advert. The event comes as El-Sayed seeks to strengthen ties with the party establishment and faces questions about whether he can unite key Democratic voter groups in a closely watched Senate race.

El-Sayed’s past criticism of Obama, including a 2012 essay faulting his presidency, has drawn renewed attention. A late-September poll cited in the article found 77% of Black voters supported El-Sayed, while interviews with more than a dozen Black voters in Detroit found mixed views: some welcomed the endorsement, but several undecided voters said it would not influence their choice. Black voter turnout could affect Democrats’ chances of retaining or gaining control of the Senate.
