## Key points

- Obama said voters rejected divisive politics.
- Democrats took both chambers of Congress.
- Trump said he would have won if on the ballot.

## Summary

Barack Obama said Democrats’ midterm victories sent the White House a clear message that Americans want politics that brings people together. He urged the party to use its new influence to make changes, limit further harm and prepare for the future during the final two years of Donald Trump’s presidency.

Democrats won both chambers of Congress, flipping six Senate seats and at least a dozen Republican-held House districts. They also made gains in state races, including wins in Texas, Kansas and South Carolina; in Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first black woman elected governor. Trump said he would have won a landslide if he had been on the ballot.
