Munich's Oktoberfest, the world's largest folk festival, opened on Saturday for its 191st edition with Mayor Dominik Krause performing the traditional keg tapping ceremony. The 16-day event, running through 4 October, is expected to attract approximately 6 million visitors. Authorities have significantly strengthened security measures following last year's temporary closure due to overcrowding, deploying AI-powered cameras to detect crowd build-ups early and implementing strict entry protocols.

Enhanced security includes a ban on knives and drones, entry checks, and a prohibition on large bags and marijuana smoking. Around 600 police officers are stationed at the festival alongside Bavarian riot police, specialised pickpocket investigators, and international task forces from eight countries. Beer prices have increased by 2.38% compared with last year, with a litre costing between €14.80 and €15.90 (£12.50 to £13.65). Whilst the majority of revellers come from Munich and southern Germany, the festival attracts millions of guests from across Germany and worldwide.
