Speaking at the Quarry Amphitheater on Saturday 25 July, Nickell described texting her son the day before he died to ask about his efforts to quit smoking, prompting him to FaceTime her and blow cigarette smoke at the camera; he told her he was excited about a helicopter trip to a mountaintop house planned for the next day. The event reflected Tree's playful, offbeat style, featuring mannequins dressed as him in coffins, a video message from the fictional head of his record label, and a montage of career highlights, alongside his mother's recollections of him as a mischievous child and a fiercely serious artist when previewing new music.
