Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere, Wilde said she was pleased that stories had moved beyond the traditional "older man, younger woman" narrative, calling it exciting that "people are breaking out of their boxes" in their taste for different kinds of love stories. In the film, Wilde plays provocateur artist Erika Tracy, who takes on a 23-year-old employee, played by Cooper Hoffman, as her muse and lover. Araki, marking his return to film after more than a decade, said the shift reflected women gaining greater power and wealth, "evening out" old patriarchal norms. He admitted early doubts about casting Hoffman after seeing him in "Licorice Pizza", but was won over by his maturity, while Hoffman said the chance to work with Araki and Wilde was too exciting to turn down. Wilde also revealed Madonna, particularly the documentary "Truth or Dare", inspired her uncompromising character.
