American long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall, the reigning Olympic and world champion, has said she feels "lucky and blessed to be alive" after surviving a head-on car crash while driving to training last week. The 27-year-old suffered a "severe" concussion in the collision and says the incident has left her unable to train, casting doubt over her participation in this month's inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships despite no ruling-out having been made yet.

Both vehicles involved were travelling at around 20mph and were written off, though Davis-Woodhall confirmed her injuries were not life-threatening. She described the timing as "really unfortunate" given she was at peak fitness, and said she is working with her medical team to assess her readiness ahead of the Budapest event, which starts on 11 September and offers a top prize of £111,000. Davis-Woodhall won long jump gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics and followed it with a world title in Tokyo the following year.
