Olympic diving champion Chantelle Newbery was arrested and remanded in custody over 19 alleged offences, including drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under the influence. Her lawyer said she had recently secured employment, stable accommodation and family support, and was rebuilding her life after years of addiction and legal difficulties.

Newbery appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court for sentencing, but her lawyer sought an adjournment because he had been unable to properly confer with her since her arrest on 25 August. The 49-year-old won Australia’s first female Olympic diving gold medal at the 2004 Athens Games, but later faced theft and drug-related convictions; her lawyer said she was saddened that allegations dating from about a year earlier had resurfaced as she was making progress. He also argued that former athletes can struggle after intense sporting careers end, noting that Newbery’s medals remain in his safekeeping because she feared they could be stolen.
