## Key points

- Hamilton claimed his first Ferrari pole.
- Russell was just 0.009 seconds behind.
- Antonelli can still secure the title on Sunday.

## Summary

Lewis Hamilton took pole for Ferrari at the Mexico City Grand Prix, his first since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. The result put the seven-time champion ahead of a weekend focused on Kimi Antonelli’s chance to secure the title, and gave Hamilton an opportunity to win a race that could delay Antonelli’s coronation.

Hamilton beat former team-mate George Russell by 0.009 seconds for the 105th pole of his career; Russell joins him on the front row. Antonelli qualified fifth, 0.184 seconds behind Russell, but moves up to fourth after Max Verstappen’s penalty. He needs only ninth place if Russell wins, or 10th if Hamilton wins, to clinch the title, and said the pressure had made him more tense than usual.
